“New Home for the Urban Prisoner” 1989

I don’t remember where this awful looking building is, but I assume it was meant to incarcerate the new exploding population of crack-Heads that were making NYC a real drag back in ’89…
If I am wrong and this is a condo with slits for windows, then I wasn’t keeping up with the latest real estate trends…

“The Bubble Boy” (New Scan) 1999

urban-prisonerI took this picture on a day when it hit 100º and the Tri-X in my Leica actually started to melt or reticulate from the heat. I almost burned my hand when I touched the camera and I guess the film was somehow damaged. Maybe I just fucked up the development, but I prefer thinking that the heatwave had its way with my film…

I always thought and of course I could be wrong, that the women were talking about men, while the men, were just talking about money…

“The Complete Budweiser Experience” 1988

This was just one of those moments where the stuff that you come across is so much better than anything you might have imagined you’d find as you left your house that morning!

Fotosidan Scandinavian Street Photography Blog

A big thanks to Tobias Ackerman who was kind enough to have “Fotosidan” feature my work. Fotosidan is one of Scandinavia’s best “Street” blogs and it’s a drag that I can’t read the text.

Motorcycle 1988

Finally, a new scan of an old favorite. I think that this image as scanned would fit on a sheet of 20×24″ paper very nicely. Maybe I should try and do that contrived bullshit, and print only five or ten of them and make a few shekels for a change…Buy one today before Gagosian buys out the entire run!

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over ten years since the massacre. I have been told that I will be remembered for this photo. I hope that’s not true…

“Perfect Kiss” 2003

Andre Kertesz the great Hungarian photographer once said he waited his whole life to take a picture of a pigeon flying in front of a tenement. (It was an amazing photo) I felt that way about this image. I could easily have gone a hundred years without being this lucky again…

This picture is NOT in my book, “The Urban Prisoner” but is used to decorate the back of the dust jacket. I have a few copies of the book which I will sell to anyone interested for $60 signed or inscribed. I will pay for the shipping as well. Paypal me and the book will appear in just three days. You can’t beat that with a stick! (A silly saying that I never liked)

Tuesday September 11th 2001

The few people who have seen this picture seem to like it. I still feel very conflicted posting these because the people out there (in cyberspace) who lost friends or family will never fail to be saddened by these images. Again, I’m sorry if I have upset anyone…

I sincerely apologize if this picture causes any pain to anyone, but I have decided to post the photos I took that morning and I realize that they can be very depressing. There is a need for discussion about what lead to the massacre and everything which happened as a result of the attacks that day. I am probably not capable of neutral and sensible debate, so please don’t expect me to see the Saudi point of view. I realize that we had military bases in Saudi Arabia and that there is a sacred black cube there which may contain Allah himself, but I never want 3,000 people to be incinerated, no matter who they are…

Blizzard of ’96

I shot almost five rolls of film during the blizzard and this is the only image that I really like. I know that to someone who lives in Minnesota, a storm delivering almost three feet of snow would seem insignificant, but to most New Yorkers, it was pretty big…
