“Offspring Approves of Double Vision!”

I finally got my copies of “Double Vision” the book on Coney Island which I did with Mike Peters. I think the book came off very well and can’t complain. I was one of those people who was pessimistic about the capabilities of Blurb. It’s nice to be wrong sometimes. My daughter likes the book too, which considering she’s got a double spread, comes as no surprise…

So far only 11 copies exist. Be the owner of copy #12 by following this link:

“The Perfect Photograph” by Jeff Ladd

Here is a far from perfect photo of Jeff Ladd’s “Perfect Photograph” This is an I-phone snap but you can see that I didn’t get all thrifty, because I sprung for an 8 ply archival mat board to house this masterpiece. Why is this perfect? I have made a big deal over this picture for a long time. To arrange SEVEN people in perfect position is almost impossible. Throw in the energy between the two girls in the middle and voila, you have a work of art! If you think it’s easy, look around at your photos, and see if this has happened to you. Now an amateur could take a picture like this with his or her Holga on the first day of use…But a master photographer could also take hundreds of excellent photographs and still never take one this perfect…Jeff is very humble when I tease him about this picture. That’s a nice trait for sure, but Jeff also is doing something which may be even more important and certainly more beneficial for all of us other photographers. He is publishing out of print photo books which very few of us could hope to afford. He now has published a dozen very scarce and significant tiles with his company, Errata Editions…Check it out!

Brooklyn 2010

Well, if I’ve taken any pictures more picturesque or “postcardesque” lately, I’m unaware of them. This is one of those pictures which we could take back into the film vs. digital debate. I’d say the quality of film is fairly obvious, and you might reply that you could sample my grain and import it into your own image. That would almost be as lame as a rapper who can’t sing or play any instruments, sampling some Led Zeppelin (Who stole plenty of riffs and licks from other bands) and importing it into his song…

Zoo York Again 2010

I was surprised to discover that my Coney Island Hoodies were selling in Russia. I asked him if I could take a snapshot for my archives and he whipped out his I-phone. I-phone photography is becoming very popular and should not be dismissed by anyone. Joel Sternfeld who is one of America’s premier large format photographers, recently published a book of his I-phone photos taken in Dubai. I think I-phones and other cell phone cameras will reach superb quality one day. Will that hurt camera sales? Yes.
