Upper West Side 1989

If the economy doesn’t improve soon, the homeless population may increase to the levels of the 1980s when the rents almost tripled in just three years from 1982-1985…

Coney Island 2011

John Wayne Handy Jr. 46 years old. He was very upset and we were discussing why god has let him live, while just a day earlier god took the life of an eight year old boy. The boy was from Brooklyn and he was dismembered. He kept moaning “Why didn’t god take me instead”  “I’m just a fucking Wino!” Yes, god was very busy rooting for the Yankees since he is also their pitching coach…

Central Park 1993

As you can see, the homeless had chosen this spot as a place to sleep since it offered a tiny bit of shelter from the tough New York city winter…

“In The Fade”

Ain’t gonna worry. Just live till you die, wanna drown,
with nowhere to fall Into the arms of someone.
There’s nothing to save, and I know you live till you die…

Brooklyn 1990

As I continue to search my older negatives, the overall feeling I get from the New York of twenty years ago is pretty depressing. This might be one of the better portraits I’ve done. It’s a sad one. Not as bad as the images we’ve all seen from third world countries, but this is New York and a twelve year old boy shouldn’t be out late at night training to become a squeegee man…
