This is one of sixteen photos I took which were included in the recent documentary by Ken Burns and his daughter Sarah.
“The Central Park Five” was about the kids who were framed to take the fall for the rape and severe beating of a woman in Central Park back in 1989. Big story, and this image was a surprise to say the least…

Photographing NYC for 25 years, six of them while driving a New York City taxi. Trying very hard to capture the city as life unfolds, meaning I never stage any of my photos! Also I am a close confidant of the immortal Dave Beckerman, (quintessential NYC photographer) and owner of the first photography blog in the known universe.

Oh wow. Great picture and great documentary. Saw it during the DOC NYC in 2012. Fascinating story.
Historical attributes aside, this is a stunning photo, Matt!
I loved it before I even read the headline. Regardless, there’s no denying the historical significance of the headline takes the photo to a whole new level.
I too watched the documentary on PBS this past year. This photo captures the mood of the experience very well.
Thanks and thanks!!
