Photographing NYC for 25 years, six of them while driving a New York City taxi. Trying very hard to capture the city as life unfolds, meaning I never stage any of my photos! Also I am a close confidant of the immortal Dave Beckerman, (quintessential NYC photographer) and owner of the first photography blog in the known universe. View all posts by Matt Weber
siiigggghhhh…before The Developers killed it all…
“Developers are people too”…Just kidding…1986 might have been the year Guns & Roses played there before they became big…
What a coincidence. I just came from Barnes & Nobles where I spent almost an hour looking at Bob Gruen’s book, Rock Seen.
Of course the book included photos of acts both in and outside of the club, but I can honestly say none of them captured the aura of CBGB’s or the surrounding area as well as your photo, Matt.
Several years I was at the Morrison Hotel Gallery on Bowery (although I don’t think it’s there any more) checking out a Bob Gruen exhibition. Besides the woman behind the desk, I was the only one there. I was blown away by the show and the number of 1970s acts he captured on film. On my way out, the woman working was chatting with a man. As I approached them she said, “Oh….let me introduce you to the photographer of the exhibit…Bob Gruen.”
Unfortunately, I was star struck and probably didn’t make the best first impression or ask any of a million amazing questions he could have answered.
I did pull it together enough to ask if he’d sign a copy of the book he was selling at the gallery if I purchased it. He did. 🙂
A friend of mine worked on several projects with Bob and I met him at a few concerts. He has worked very hard. Harder than most people do in any field!
I can’t even begin to guess how many shows he has covered…
The good old times, Matt. And that you hit me while wearing my old worn-out CBGB shirt must mean something.
All the best & safe travels, Fritsch.
My CBGB’s T shirt doesn’t really fit anymore…Oh well.
