I use to take a lot of photos early in the morning on the weekends when the streets were quiet. I Just found this negative after a quarter of a century and I think there’s a possibility you will want to purchase a print of this onetime porn palace in its final days.. Matt, this is an great shot and so far removed from the Times Square I am familiar with today. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have even guessed this was in NYC….no skyscrapers in the skyline, no sea of people flooding the sidewalks. What part of Times Square was this located at and do you know how long the Pussy Cat was there? Was it opened until the end, or had it been abandoned for some time?
Greg, I couldn’t find out much other than there was another Pussycat lounge which closed recently downtown near ground zero…I thought there would be more info on this place.
Agreed…after seeing your photo, I immediately went to Wikipedia to read about the history…nada.
I even did a Flickr search to see if I could learn something…nothing.

Shot in b&w in 1965, it features extraordinary street scenes of Times Square. It’s pretty much become a cult favorite…never officially released on DVD in the states, but I bought one on Amazon that was imported from England (it works on computers and my cheap DVD player).
It was directed by Joseph Cates (Phoebe Cates father) and stars Sal Mineo, Elaine Stritch and Juliet Prowse.
It’s bizarre to see Juliet Prowse walk down streets displaying posters of Barbra Streisand starring in “Funny Girl” on Broadway. Meanwhile Sal Mineo can’t stay away from the porn shops of Times Square from back in the day.
A totally bizarre film that is unusually entertaining as well as an amazing time capsule of that period.

Maybe you should take a trip to Coney Island or the Rockaways…
Both would be a first for me. Harlem is the furthest I’ve ventured out of Manhattan.
What I REALLY need is a month in a NYC to photograph the city…but it’s not in my budget.
