In some neighborhoods, the churches were the only buildings which didn’t get torched. On the upper west side, they did burn down some churches to build high rises. If there’s enough money at stake, some people will do anything…

Photographing NYC for 25 years, six of them while driving a New York City taxi. Trying very hard to capture the city as life unfolds, meaning I never stage any of my photos! Also I am a close confidant of the immortal Dave Beckerman, (quintessential NYC photographer) and owner of the first photography blog in the known universe.

This is a view looking East on E. 158th St. between Melrose and Elton Avenues. The year is up for debate but there has been substantial reconstruction since this shot was taken. The churches still stand as does the structure to the right….430 E. 158th St.
My guess is sometime during the 80s as the public school PS 51 is visible in the background and it was demolished sometime around 1990.
Thanks for the info!
The building on the far right….430 E. 158 Street had a major fire last Tuesdsy night….so the Churches….like in many areas of the Bronx are the last ones standing.
