Photographing NYC for 25 years, six of them while driving a New York City taxi. Trying very hard to capture the city as life unfolds, meaning I never stage any of my photos! Even more of an anomaly…why are the marquees all blank?
Were these the first days of Giuliani?
Exactly! 1993 was the Ghoulianis’ first year…
I love studying your photos, Matt…and always appreciate your feedback. 🙂
I’m assuming you’ve heard about the Chelsea by now? I made it a point to sit in the lobby for a few minutes while I was visiting last month(just in case).
All the places that have/had magic for me are disappearing…and I don’t even live there.
Here’s my source:

Real estate developers are unbelievable! They almost always wear suits, but they aren’t that well educated. They have no feelings for fellow man.
They can make lawyers look good. Money means more to them than their mothers. I’m not exaggerating…
Viewing your site from over here in Scotland, I’m not 100% clear on the impact Rudy Giuliani had on New York?
Rudy is either loved for hiring a Boston police chief who cleaned up New York or hated for going after all the “little people” too as he made New York a safer but much blander city…
I wouldn’t say it was bland when I visited last year but it certainly has changed enormously if your pictures are anything to go by. The edgy elements I’ve seen in them seem to have been completely removed, particularly the area of Times Square, which is changed beyond belief.
That’s true…The crowds are still something to adjust to,and there are places which are still a little edgy…As money becomes scarcer,
some people will start to misbehave more…
