There are so many photographers walking around these days that it can be overwhelming. I use to get a nod of respect from people who recognized that I was sporting a nice camera. These days, very few people even know what a rangefinder, let alone a Leica is…

Photographing NYC for 25 years, six of them while driving a New York City taxi. Trying very hard to capture the city as life unfolds, meaning I never stage any of my photos! Also I am a close confidant of the immortal Dave Beckerman, (quintessential NYC photographer) and owner of the first photography blog in the known universe.

Try a Graflex if you never have. Those rangefinders still gets nods of respect from everyone.
The Minox will make me seem like “The Man From Uncle”
Conversation I had this morning:
“Is that a Holga?”
“No, it’s a Leica.”
“Oh?”
Michael . . . I love the conversation.
Sigh. I use a gigantic DSLR. It was cheap for somethign nice, it’s effective. I dream of a Leica, but they are far too expensive for a student like me. I don’t think I’d use anything else If I was lucky enough to own one.
All people on my course use Holgas, I don’t mind it, but their ownders air of superiority used to infuriate me, that was till I was asked “how do you put a film into it”.
It was all fine after that.
That’s funny. I guess if it wasn’t for Holga’s then nobody would be getting into film these days. I think Leica’s are getting cheaper on the second hand market (ebay)
but I haven’t checked and unfortunately the Leica lenses are never going to be cheap. I took many of my best pictures with a $149 Canon AE-1 and a $99 lens…
Leicas are a luxury which are not that important. Nice, but not necessary…
