I took many pictures of the “Checker taxicab” after they ceased production in 1982. I figured since they were an endangered species, I should photograph them in their natural habitat. My pal Dave Beckerman sells quite a few calendars come Christmas season each year. I think my Checker pictures will make a decent calendar. Only time will tell…

Photographing NYC for 25 years, six of them while driving a New York City taxi. Trying very hard to capture the city as life unfolds, meaning I never stage any of my photos! Also I am a close confidant of the immortal Dave Beckerman, (quintessential NYC photographer) and owner of the first photography blog in the known universe.

Wow Matt,
The checker, Blimpie and the Bromley in the background under construction, it’s amazing how much has changed and yet how one photograph can take us back, thanks for the memories.
Thanks! I’m waiting to see your “Chromes” which you’ve been keeping to yourself!
Just need to bring them in (do not have the time to scan them all myself, plus i have my fathers stuff on 120 mm and super 8 as well).
Thanks for the photo. I loved those old cars.
You know, I wonder what that Cabbie is up to these days? I wonder if he is still driving?
All the best.
My money says he retired, but you never know…Thanks
I’m loving the idea of a Checker cab calendar, Matt. So many childhood memories of those unique folding seats. We loved them as kids back in the ’60s, when there were nothing but Checkers in the New York streets.
John, Checkers took us everywhere…Back in the bandshell days, I would hop a Checker at 88 st. & Broadway and tell the driver to take me to 72d & CPW at which point the fare was always $1.65…being a big tipper at 16 years of age, I’d toss the driver a deuce and be on my way…
Matt,
Love this shot! It just captures the feel of the city at that time beautifully! Love the old Blimpie sign!
Thanks Nancy! That was my old corner and the place I bought many a lunch while in junior high…
