Photographing NYC for 25 years, six of them while driving a New York City taxi. Trying very hard to capture the city as life unfolds, meaning I never stage any of my photos! Also I am a close confidant of the immortal Dave Beckerman, (quintessential NYC photographer) and owner of the first photography blog in the known universe. View all posts by Matt Weber

I love this shot!!! only a city kid can understand the pleasure in watching what flows down a rain drain set in pavement.
Thanks Leslie! Yes, some things are unique to us city folk..
Brilliant work Matt, Love the light on this one.
Thanks Nathan…You’re a photographer longer than I am and there some types of light where even someone taking their first picture couldn’t screw up…Well maybe not, but someone famous once said, (Maybe Ansel Adams) “Stay away from cute babies and sunsets” He meant, if you shoot those all the time, you’ll think you are a good photographer… Despite the truth in that…patience is the way to really take advantage of perfect light and or subjects…
I’ll “waste” the better part of a roll on anything that even has a even a hint of potential. I must have taken fifteen shots of those kids just to get one decent one…
It looks – to this small-town/big-city-adjacent dweller – like some mystical and ancient religious rite being performed. Human sacrifice to appease the gods, no doubt.
But in my small town, we don’t lie down in the gutter when it rains. But then it doesn’t rain very often…
Where do you live, Flagstaff Arizona?
Even smaller than that (but not drier). Ventura, California. I find shooting the street frustrating here. Not because there aren’t any people on the street, but *I* have to get in my car and go somewhere as a special trip if I want to shoot the street. Which I do from time to time, but it’s tough to keep my skills sharp. Nothing happens outdoors in suburbia.
Matt, I can’t argue with what you’re saying. Suburbs are important socially and should be documented, but it’s easier to say ”
go take pictures”, than it is to actually take them…
