One of my favorite late night stops was at the Optimo store which was open 24 hours.

An Egg Cream for 35¢ and a pack of smokes for 55¢ were probably my standard purchase.

Zeckendorf built a very tall building here a few months later…

I’m sure I didn’t even bother to get out of my cab. I was pretty lazy at first. I think this would’ve been Stillwell Ave. and Stauch’s bathhouse in this picture, but I’m no expert. Had I a chance to go back in time, I think I would have concentrated on that colony of telephones poles, in search of an “artsy” snap or two. I might have even dropped a dime into one of those meters and taken a stroll…
