  1. The timeless magic that is Marilyn. 🙂

What other celebrity, living or dead, has managed to stay so relevant to modern day culture? Truly a timeless figure.

I’m sure Andy Warhol is to be credited to some extent for her never-ending fame, but ultimately Marilyn created an image that resonated not only with Americans, but cultures around the globe. Apparently, not even Marilyn herself could sustain the larger-than-life image she created.

In the Joan Rivers documentary “A Piece of Work” released last year, she discusses meeting Marilyn. Rivers stated Marilyn was very intelligent and also very aware of the character she was creating for a hetero-male dominated society.

And of course George Zimbel has to be credited for shooting one of, if not THE most famous photos of Marilyn standing over the subway vents on Lexington Avenue.

Through the Spring of 2012, there’s currently a 26 foot statue of the famous Marilyn pose on display on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue directly across from the Chicago Tribune building. The legend lives on.

  2. Whether or not one considers her to be beautiful, there is no denying that she was the most photogenic woman of modern times. She was photographed by 1,000s of people,
and never looked really bad in any picture I’ve seen! Elliott Erwitt also made it to that famous shoot and took some snaps of the A Train blowing up her skirt…

  3. Matt…I wasn’t aware of that…thanks.

Have you checked out the Elliot Erwitt exhibit at International Center of Photography? I really enjoyed it, although it left me wondering which photos were street photography and which ones were for marketing/advertising purposes.

Richard Avedon’s exhibit a couple years ago, however, still remains my favorite to date. 🙂

  4. I haven’t seen it but probably should. He’s almost like Picasso as far as his output is concerned. I think he may have been the most prolific photographer yet.
The amount of good and great pictures he’s taken is mind boggling…
