“Carnival” Times Sq. 1985

I couldn’t find out anything about this place which was located just east of Times Sq.

Woman Fishing 1985

What I want to know is how old is the mooring post? Was it there in the 19th century? Is it still there? There is another one a few paces down the street.

“My First Taxicab” 1985

There was this cute little gas station on 94th & 3d Ave. and my taxi had a KYSOR AC unit on the roof, which was made for trucks. Needless to say, I was chilling…

89th Street Community Garden 1985

My dad fought against Ed Koch who suddenly wanted to build townhouses on this abandoned lot, where a few industrious upper west siders had been growing tomatoes. The real estate values had finally begun to climb after many years of stagnation. My dad was able to convince the city to leave one sliver of the garden alone, and now the garden known for its flowers is a place of relaxation for many, with occasional plays and music being performed there.

Harlem 1985

I just scanned this Kodachrome slide from ’85 and it is all about the old traffic light. Back when I took the picture these were already very rare. Besides this one in Harlem, there was one in central park and another one on Park Ave. Forgotten New York has more on these beautiful structures…

SOHO 1986

Does anyone remember this little newsstand turned fruit stand on Prince St? One day the owner discovered these vintage Camel signs underneath some plywood, and the pickup truck complimented the scene perfectly…

GIMBELS 1986

I dig the tarnished overpass which I imagine is now once again mint…
